Start with the signal chain
The cartridge converts groove movement into a very small electrical signal. That signal normally passes through a phono stage, then volume control and power amplification before loudspeakers turn it into sound. Products can combine these functions, but the functions still need to exist somewhere.

An integrated product can shorten the list. Some products put the turntable, the phono stage, the preamplifier and the power amplifier in one box, so the only missing part is a pair of speakers. That is one architecture, not a shopping recommendation.
Choose one of three simple system shapes
Turntable plus powered speakers
This is the shortest wired system when the turntable has a built-in phono stage or the speakers have a phono input. A turntable set to LINE can feed an ordinary line input on powered speakers. You control volume on the speakers or their remote.
Turntable, amplifier and passive speakers
An integrated amplifier or receiver provides input selection, volume control and power for passive speakers. If it has a compatible PHONO input, the turntable can feed it directly; otherwise add a separate phono stage or use the turntable's built-in one.
Turntable, phono stage and existing audio system
A separate phono stage converts the cartridge output to line level. Its output then goes to AUX, LINE, CD or another line input—not to a second phono input.
Understand PHONO and LINE
A PHONO output is intended for a phono stage. A LINE output has already passed through one. On switchable turntables, the Audio-Technica AT-LP60 manual directs PHONO to a receiver's phono input and LINE to AUX, CD, tape or powered speakers.
- PHONO output to PHONO input: correct when cartridge type and input are compatible.
- LINE output to AUX or powered-speaker line input: correct.
- PHONO output to AUX: usually extremely quiet and tonally wrong.
- LINE output to PHONO: usually overloaded, loud and distorted.
Some phono stages and amplifiers distinguish moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges. Beginners should verify the cartridge type and use a matching setting rather than assuming every PHONO socket is universal.
Check compatibility before buying
- Does the turntable include a cartridge, and is the stylus replaceable and available?
- Is the phono stage built into the turntable, amplifier or speakers, or is a separate one needed?
- Are the speakers powered or passive, and who provides volume control?
- Do the connectors match, including any ground wire required by the turntable?
- Can the furniture support the turntable level and away from speaker vibration?
- Does the package include the necessary cables, power supplies and 45 RPM adapter?
Bluetooth is an optional transport, not a missing stage by itself. A wireless turntable still performs phono amplification before transmission, and the receiving speaker or headphones provide their own amplification.
Set up the first day without rushing
Assemble by the manual
Install the platter, belt, counterweight and cartridge only where the model instructions require it. Do not readjust factory-set arms casually.
Place the turntable level
Use a rigid surface, preferably separated from the speakers and footfall.
Connect with power off
Set PHONO or LINE deliberately, connect left and right channels, attach ground if supplied and keep volume low for the first test.
Test with a replaceable record
Select the correct speed, remove the stylus guard and use the cueing control rather than dropping the arm by hand.
Check both channels
Confirm normal volume, no severe hum and stable playback before using a valuable record.
Do not spend the entire budget on the turntable and treat everything after it as an afterthought. A modest compatible chain that is easy to operate is a better first system than an impressive deck waiting for missing electronics.
