Identify the turntable output
Look for a PHONO/LINE switch, the manual and the labels beside the sockets. PHONO is the low cartridge-level signal; LINE means a phono stage has already amplified and equalized it. A fixed-output turntable may provide only one of these.

Choose the path for your speakers
Powered speakers
Powered speakers contain their own amplifier and volume control. Feed them LINE level from a turntable with built-in phono stage or from a separate phono preamp. Use the speaker's analogue line input unless its manual identifies a genuine phono input.
Passive speakers
Passive speakers connect to speaker outputs on an integrated amplifier or receiver. The turntable connects to an input on that amplifier; it does not connect directly to the speaker terminals.
Headphones
Most turntables and phono stages cannot drive headphones directly. Use a receiver, integrated amplifier, powered speaker with headphone output or a dedicated headphone amplifier after the phono stage.
Connect the system step by step
Switch everything off
Turn volume down and disconnect power where the manuals require it before changing analogue cables.
Set PHONO or LINE
Choose the switch position for the destination before testing.
Connect left and right
White is normally left and red right. Push plugs fully without twisting sockets in the chassis.
Attach ground when provided
Connect the turntable ground lead to the amplifier or phono-stage ground terminal. Do not attach it to mains earth by improvisation.
Select the correct input
Choose the same AUX, LINE or PHONO input on the amplifier that received the cable.
Power up at low volume
Start with the stylus guard removed and the correct speed selected, then raise volume gradually.
Keep power adapters and excess mains cable away from the delicate phono cable when practical. Cross power and audio cables rather than running them tightly together for long distances.
Solve common connection symptoms

Hum can also come from a damaged cable, nearby power supply, cartridge wiring or a ground loop. Adding random extra earth wires can create a safety problem. If the maker's normal ground connection and cable placement do not solve it, troubleshoot one component at a time or ask a technician.
Run a safe first test
Use a clean, familiar record that is not irreplaceable. Confirm the correct speed, use the cueing lever and listen at moderate volume. Both channels should be present, the volume control should behave normally and no connector should become hot.
- Label the working PHONO/LINE position if the switch is hard to see.
- Photograph cable routing before moving the system.
- Do not hot-plug the cartridge or headshell with the amplifier loud.
- If using Bluetooth, test the wired path separately when diagnosing an analogue problem.
- Recheck every input selection after a power cut or receiver reset.
