How to Set Tracking Force and Anti-Skate

  3. Turn the counterweight

Set and verify tracking force

After zeroing, turn the complete counterweight assembly until the recommended number reaches the reference mark. The printed scale is a setup aid; a separate gauge checks the actual downward force.

    Use its specified measuring point on the platter so the stylus sits close to normal playing height.

  2. Lower the stylus gently

    Use the cueing lever where practical and keep the stylus inside the gauge's marked target.

  3. Read and adjust

    Make small counterweight changes, lift the arm between attempts and repeat until the reading matches the target.

  4. Recheck after moving the deck

    A moved counterweight, changed headshell or new cartridge requires a fresh setup.

Tracking force is how hard the stylus presses into the groove; Ortofon stresses taking the value from the cartridge specification rather than setting it by ear. Too little force can cause mistracking; too much can overload the suspension and increase wear.

Set anti-skate by the turntable method

Anti-skate counteracts the inward skating tendency of a pivoted arm. A common domestic starting point is the same numerical value as tracking force, and Audio-Technica uses that instruction in several manuals. Weight-and-thread systems may specify a groove position instead of a number.

Use the turntable manual rather than an unmodulated blank disc as a universal calibration method. Skating force varies across the record and with groove modulation, so a dramatic visual trick can suggest false precision.

Finish with a controlled playback check

Reinstall any guard or accessory removed during setup, confirm the cartridge is secure and play a clean, familiar, non-valuable record at low volume. The arm should lower smoothly and track without repeated skipping or obvious distortion.
